These pieces are a selection from ‘15 Hungarian Peasant Songs’ (UE6370), a collection of old songs and dance tunes for piano composed by Bela Bartók between 1914 and 1917. The arrangement for recorder ensemble was made with the intention of familiarising children and young people with these pieces at an early age, as they are less difficult in this form than the piano works.
The content of the pieces was not altered by the chosen instrumentation. As Bartók explained in his Violin Duets in 1932, ‘in the first years of their studies, pupils should familiarise themselves with performance works that combine the unaffected simplicity of folk music with its melodic and rhythmic characteristics.’ (Christa Sokoll)
