Termöhlen, Nicola - Mandragora - 2 tenor recorders

The "Mandragora" is a nightshade plant, around which many myths entwine. The roots of the plant are similar to the shape of a human being. According to the medieval superstition, this plant grew predominantly under freshly hanged on the gallows persons. When they were cut off from the earth, they heard a terrible song that either directly killed all the people around them or plunged them into profound misfortune.

The composition "Mandragora" for 2 tenor recorder plays with this tension between tantalizing vocals and imminent danger. The two voices switch between instrumental playing, singing and singing into the instrument. Unison merges into polyphony and canon. So the composition uses all facets of the interaction.
